Your Adventure Awaits!

2026 Shoe Science TrailNav Series

Looking for a new challenge? Love being outdoors in nature? Love hiking or trail running? Have a sense of direction? Or maybe no sense of direction but definitely a sense of adventure? Either way, a TrailNav Challenge is just the thing for you.

A what?

Lactic Turkey Events has organised quality Rogaine or TrailNav Challenge events since 2002!

Flexability

You choose the plan, the distance and the route..all within the time (3 hrs or 90mins)

We give you a map and the challenge involves navigating around the area (don’t worry, it’s all pretty straightforward navigation – if you can read a street map or zoo/museum map you can do this!) and finding checkpoints (worth a varying amount of points) identified on a map to gain the most points. Some are easy (you get there, you get points, end of story), others have awesome mystery activities that give you extra points.

IF ENTERING ANY JUNIORS (as a junior team or with adults)…
You enter them as adults (so on the first screen, just select how many people are in your team – adults and juniors totalled) and once you’ve entered everyone’s names etc, you’ll be asked how many juniors there are in the team.  The junior discount will then be applied at the checkout based on this question.  If entering a family you should not answer the juniors question as your entry is already discounted.

$55

or $30 for Juniors (18yrs and under) or Seniors (over 70yrs)

or $130 for families (2 adults and up to 3 kids under 17 who all live at the same address)

  • $10 extra per person for entries received after the Tuesday before the event.  We need this cutoff because we need to know numbers for map printing and catering, however we will print some spare maps.  In recent events we’ve had too many people leave entry to the last minute which makes it difficult for planning.
  • All entry fees are expressed in New Zealand Dollars
  • Acknowledgement of entry is by email once payment is received.
  • The Organisers reserve the right to combine event categories if there are less than ten participants in a category.

The Details

Registration on Arrival

At registration you will collect a race pack which has the following for the team:

  • Maps
  • Plastic bags to protect maps if needed (feel free to return these to registration before the start if you don’t think you’ll need them)
  • Navigational checkpoint descriptions – lists the checkpoints location and a description of the exact spot to find the marker
  • Mystery activity descriptions – list all the activities, a description, what points they are worth and where they are.

MapRun – The Timing and Scoring App

We are using an electronic scoring system at this event. It is important that you read the information and set up the app on your team’s phone as well as fully charging the battery before you come to the event on Sunday.

We have all the information about how to get set up before the event and use the app during the event, on the dedicated MapRun page on our website

In summary you download the event before you arrive.  At the start we give everyone the pin code to release the course for starting.  Once you start, the app records, using GPS on your phone, where you are and records your path.  You navigate to the checkpoint (using the paper map we provide) and when you get within a few metres of the correct spot, the app will beep and give you a notification saying you’ve scored the points for that checkpoint.  You continue doing this and when you’re ready to finish, you go to the finish checkpoint and the app will stop your time and send the results to us.  It calculates the score and deducts any penalty points if you are late (30 points per min late).

Afterwards from the app you can see the current results and also see your route around the course and compare this to other peoples routes on a map on the screen.  Magic aye!!!  Of course these will just be the results for the navigation side of the event – we’ll add your mystery activities points and calculate the final scores for prize giving.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Appropriate footwear for the event.
  • A raincoat is needed if it is raining and the event will still go ahead even in rain! If this is the case, a change of clothing will be needed for afterwards.
  • We recommend each solo/team takes a little first aid kit with them. Any medication should also be taken (eg. for allergies or asthma).
  • A pen, pencil or highlighter for planning. It is recommended you take one with you out on the course too.
  • A fully charged mobile phone and maybe a power bank if you’re on the long course
