Orienteering is a fun, challenging sport where you use a map (and sometimes a compass) to complete a course in unfamiliar areas.  School orienteering is experiencing a huge growth in popularity with many events attracting more than 400 students.

This great sport provides a fun and exciting competitive environment, offering students the ability to visit new areas and is so much more than just going for a run.  Orienteers may walk or run – fitness is not a necessity, although it does help if a student wants to be competitive.

The Auckland Schools Sprint Series is a 5 week series within each of the five regions of Auckland and is open for years 7-8 students and secondary school students.  The series culminates in an Auckland Regional Final (2 events on one day) for the top students qualifying from each region.

For those new to orienteering and wanting to give it a go, the Auckland Schools Sprint Series is a great way to get started and to try orienteering. The courses are through school grounds and generally not too difficult.

The 2022 Sprint Series has been cancelled due to COVID-19

The 2022 School Sprint Orienteering Series in February/March 2022, due to Auckland being in Red Traffic Light setting and therefore schools not allowing us access to their grounds to organise the events.

We are looking at an alternative for Term 1, that schools can do in their own time using local park maps around Auckland and using an app called MapRun6 (which allows people to complete an orienteering course(s) in their own time).  This will at least allow some orienteering for schools. We’ll communicate details of this shortly, once it’s organised.
Should COVID restrictions allow, we may try for a shortened Sprint Series in Term 2 and potentially a sprint final event in a weekend of Term 2.

The remaining events for Auckland Schools orienteering events for 2022 (subject to COVID restrictions levels), are as follows:

  • North Island Secondary School Orienteering Champs – 28-30 April (based in Auckland)
  • Auckland Individual Orienteering Championships – 25 May
  • Auckland Relay Orienteering Championships – 16 June
  • New Zealand Secondary School Orienteering Championships – 21-23 July (based in South Auckland)
  • Auckland Rogaine Orienteering Championships – 9 August

We look forward to sharing more information on these 2022 events later this year.

Lactic Turkey organises a variety of events throughout the year with the aim of getting people into the outdoors.  Our events are aimed at people of all ages, fitness levels and skills. We want people to get out and give our adventures a go, relishing the buzz that comes with conquering the challenge.

Our professionally organised events inspire a real sense of self-belief in the participants when obstacles are overcome. The common profile of a Lactic Turkey competitor is a person that wants to get into the outdoors to experience life and conquer the physical and mental challenges that inevitably arise. We as event organisers are active in outdoor pursuits and enjoy exploring new places.

Lactic Turkey Events likes to give back to the communities who support our events.  We have organised events that are fundraisers for local schools, The Graeme Dingle Foundation, KidsCan, the Auckland Zoo Orangutan programme and The Westy Trust amongst others

We also support youth into the outdoors by sponsoring youth events like the Hillary Challenge and Get2Go and organising for the Auckland Council a Secondary Schools Sustainability Adventure Race.
