A 42km, 25km, 17 or 10km off-road run/walk based around Rainbow Mountain, Rotorua.  And something for the kids 1 or 2 laps around the lake – Kids Rainbow Dash 2km (7yrs and under) or a Kids Rainbow Run 4.5km (over 7yrs).

From the top of Rainbow Mountain you might see the Double Rainbow! If not, sorry, you’ll have to settle for the view of Tarawera, Rotorua District and to the South West the Central North Island volcanos!

A great variety of tracks from the beautiful DOC tracks going up and down Rainbow Mountain which go through geo-thermal activity, to private farmland tracks or forest roads.

THE COURSE

The course starts with a half lap of Lake Okaro, then through so lush farmland, before crossing underneath SH38 and joining the new cycle track around the base of Rainbow Mountain. This joins the existing track to the summit which offers amazing views (double rainbow like views!) including the central North Island volcanos. Then it’s down a mountain bike downhill trail and around the base to the track up to the summit again. The 42km will climb four times, the 25km two times and the 17km once! You return from the mountain under the highway again and back through the farmland to finish at Lake Okaro. See the maps below for each course.

The 10km course will not climb Rainbow Mountain but will instead make use of the private farmland.

We have some Double Rainbow Truckers caps and our mandatory gear first aid kits for sale at the Double Rainbow store which is HERE

DIRECTIONS

The event centre will be at Lake Okaro. Take SH5 south of Rotorua for around 20km and turn left on SH38. Travel along here just over a 1 km and turn left onto Okaro Road. The event centre is on the right about a kilometre along this road. Allow about half an hour from central Rotorua.

COMPULSORY CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT

The safety of our participants is important to us. For this reason we insist every participant (25 and 42km course) carries certain minimum clothing and safety equipment. Participant’s compulsory gear will be checked by race officials randomly at registration. Course marshals may check compulsory gear on the course.  Failure to have compulsory gear may lead to a time penalty or disqualification.

Each participant must carry the following (relevant to both the 42 and 25km courses): Weatherproof parka, thermal gloves and hat, polypropylene or thermal long sleeve shirt, whistle and a first aid kit. The first aid kit must contain as a minimum: 2 metres of adhesive strapping tape, 4 bandaids, 2 gauze pads, 4 cm width crepe bandage, 2 pain relief tablets (Panadol or similar) and a survival blanket.

We recommend a reduced version of the equipment above for the 17km course but it is not compulsory.

Please ensure you have enough nutritional supplies and water for your needs (aid stations are listed below).

ON COURSE REFRESHMENTS

Please ensure you have enough nutritional supplies and water for your needs.  Saying that, we will provide the following aid stations:

  • 42km Course station at 11.3km, 18.3km, 28.3km and 35.3km (water and some food).

  • 25km Course station at 11.5km and 18.5km (water and some food).

  • 17km Course station at 10.5km (water and some food).

REUSABLE CUPS

Lactic Turkey Events tries to do our bit for the environment and we’ve been #paperplasticcupfree for our trail runs for two years now.  We’ve sourced a new type of 220ml foldable/crushable reusable cup as per below.

Thanks to IronOak Financial Services, everyone will get one of these free for their first event, to use at our events or any other event that is cupless!

There will not be any paper/plastic cups at the aid stations throughout the day or at the finish line, so you will need to take this on the run with you to use.

CUT OFF

There will be a cut-off at the summit of Rainbow Mountain at 2pm. You will not be able to start a 4th lap of the course after this time. You will be directed back down the road towards the finish thus only completing 3 laps.

POST RACE REFRESHMENTS

As part of your entry fee we provide a light meal after the race.  Hand in your race number to claim your meal.  This year the light meal will be pumpkin soup (gluten free/vegan) Hot dogs, fruit, and some home baking (biscuits , slices, muffins etc).

For supporters there will be a cup of homemade pumpkin soup for $3 and a hotdog for $4, cash only.

This food is provided by the Rotorua Brass, who are a community organisation based next to Pak N Save in Rotorua and funds go towards music and instruments, so they can make music and offer lessons to learners at minimal cost.

We are also lucky to be sponsored by Kereru Brewery so have a free beverage for every finished.

Also available at the finish line/event centre there will be a coffee van – on a cash basis only as they do not have eftpos
