The Wild Kiwi 21km

Had a fun race at The Wild Kiwi 21km yesterday up around the hills of the Whangarei Heads. A training session supposedly but with the pressure of race, so trying not to go too hard….which is near impossible with competitive bugger like myself!

Amazing course with lots of stairs and steep climbs broken up with some awesome technical bush running, fast gravel tracks and a coupe of some road sprints. I ended up getting a decent cold the day before so struggled with lack of sleep and on the big climbs struggled to get enough good stuff into my lungs but was happy despite this to go reasonably hard and placed 4th overall. Had a good tussle with Dion Blundell who came past me just before the second big up and motivated me to keep pushing through feeling rough. I caught him after the technical flats and downhill and he then took off again at the next climb. As we popped out of the bush I saw him ahead, chasing him hard for the remainder of the 2-3km which was a road section and was closing the gap but ran out of runway. Finished in 2hrs45.

Racing with my Ultraspire NZ Zygos pack loaded with the same gear/weight as I’ll have for UTA100 next month, liquids (water and Tailwind Nutrition NZ) and nutrition the same as I’ll use race day and the same Icebug New Zealand shoes I’ll be wearing too so this was a great test of all this!

Thanks Photos4sale for the photos – happy with progress on the jump shots!
